Resentment’s Soul

Teresa’s prompt:  Your task today is to choose an emotion (love, hate, fear, joy, etc.) and fully personify it. You can do this in prose or poetry.  As always feel free to use one of the images.  Once you’ve written your piece please tag your work Mindlovesmisery’s Menagerie and Saturday Mix.

Haggard yellowed years have painted teeth,

Visage creased and jaundiced by bitter bile.

Hair lusterless, lost glow of countenance

Tells heart’s story in wrinkled pages.

Eyes squint against glaring view of

Disappointments, disillusionment; deceitful

Dreams offered, then stolen, shredded—

Tattered pieces of promises.

Defensive posture, spine bent from betrayals;

Gait tense an tired, eager-to-be-gone from

Tormenting reminders, acid memories…from self

Which, despite longing, cannot change, repent.

Lips once ripe, inviting, now pressed thin; sullen with

Effort to suppress biting words—toxic, for wounding

…Infrequent voice a murmured death rattle.

Gone, beautiful innocence, youth’s sparkled hope—

Smoke spiraling from charred bridges burnt.

Thoughts succumbed to disease, malignancy

Incurable… Resentment’s leprous soul

Lives out days in parched pool of isolation, hedged by

Desert’s dead grass tufts, cracked arid dirt.
