It had taken a lifetime to develop,

But finally she’d grown the outward

Protuberance which manifested the

Anomaly of her inner soul’s being;

The reality of her peculiar weirdness…

Her different-ness now had a beak.

No longer was there need to isolate

In shame, embarrassment—shunned.

The disabled, in wheelchairs, didn’t have to;

They were accorded rights, especially

The right to be treated with respect.

She never hid her light under a bushel—

Why hide the *unique beak?

Before long, she saw slightly similar

Beaked persons:  on the bus, in the library,

Buying groceries; and at the beach…

That’s where she met another beaked poet.

Her heart had not felt so lifted, full.
