Miracle, Sign of God

“But a miracle is a miracle—the sign of God”

~ Boris Pasternak, author

Happy to report an answer to fervent prayers:  after 55 days without rain, we got a nice cooling shower last night, Hallelujah!!  Can’t remember when I’ve been thrilled to be chilly 🙂  God hears, He’s faithful to answer—He’s a Good Good Father

Faith, God of the Impossibles

“Alice laughed: “There’s no use trying,” she said; “one can’t believe impossible things.”
“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll

When I was much younger, my fave book was Alice in Wonderland—I read it over and over, and over.  Many years of life’s less-than-gentle lessons later I read it again, and the lines about believing impossible things struck me.  They sound like a message about Faith—whether faith in oneself, or someone or something else.

Ultimately, I had to put my faith in God—the Bible’s Almighty God; the Great I AM; the triune God—Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit; the God of power and Amazing Grace—and LOVE which defies comprehension when you read the history of man’s sin and bonehead failings…or when I look in the inner mirror and cringe at my smudged heart full of lack and lapses.

It’s a miracle that He continues to love me—patiently, enduringly, passionately, affectionately—seems a huge “impossible”.  Yet He’s told me so a million times, in a billion ways; reduced my arguments to dust; and gathered my ‘resistance to receive’ close and hard against His heart…until I can’t breathe till I say YES.  I believe His impossible love for me because He proves it unceasingly.

There are impossibles I’ll likely never budge on and believe.  It’s impossible for me to sprout wings and fly; and more so, that I’ll grow angel wings while walking to the bus stop.  But since those things aren’t crucial to my well-being, it’s not necessary to believe them.  I do, however, need to believe in God who not only provided Jesus for my Eternal Salvation, but is willing to save me daily…mostly from myself.

Unlike some folks, I don’t get weighed down by debates that what I believe—Faith—must be logically or scientifically proven.  God says He wants our faith to be childlike:  young kids will believe anything.  It took a long, grown-up while for me to reclaim that gift of faith to believe “anything” of God.  Faith involves our freedom to choose it.

Thus, I believe every word, sign, wonder and miracle recorded in God’s Word, the Bible.  I don’t care if it “doesn’t seem reasonable”—why? because a whole lot of my reasoning caused me to make choices which led down alleys of destruction.  Proverbs 14:12, English Standard Version  “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”

I believe the Red Sea parted; water turned into wine for a wedding; mud mixed with Jesus’ spit made a blind man see; dead Lazarus came alive again when Jesus called his name…on and on, I BELIEVE.  And since God says all kinds of wonderful things about me, because He Himself breathed me into existence…I’m gonna swim through tears and dig down deep till I believe those words too.

I figure I’m in excellent company because Job, who was covered in mess and had the worst of unsupportive friends, said this of God:  Job 42:2  “I know that You can do all things, And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted”.  Whatever His purposed good plan for me is, apparently I will see it come to fruition one day.

Maybe I’ll try what the queen in Alice’s story did—to believe at least a few impossible things before breakfast.  Wanna join me?

May God bless your week with immeasurable love and provisions of His favor Jael
