Hope, Faith, Love, Forgiveness

“Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope.  Nothing true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith.  Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we are saved by love.  No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as from our standpoint.  Therefore we must be saved by the final form of love, which is forgiveness.”

Reinhold Niebuhr, The Irony of American History, 1952

Cringe-Worthy Shame

Cringe-worthy shame—my soul winces,

Reproved within by conscience, for my

Intolerant thoughts, words: harsh judgment of others which belies,

Negates that I’m made in the image of Loving God, saved by same

Grace I withhold.  I beg forgiveness. I’m Not set above them, possessed of

Entitlement to more abundant mercies… Lord, please cleanse my heart.

Puncture Wounds

Lord, long ago they punctured

Your hands and feet with

Hateful heavy nails,

Drove a spear through Your side

As You hung on the Cross at Calvary.

Yet that day, Your heart forgave them

Their blind faithless ignorance

And darkest self-consumed sins—

And You continue to forgive us,

Me, today.

So many people have

Punctured hearts, Lord—

Wounds caused by others

And those we’ve walked into

Foolishly, willfully;

But You took the Cross

Suffered the agonies, died and

Rose from the grave to LIVE

Eternally at God’s right hand.

You did this freely, from Love,

That we would have Grace to come

Boldly before the Father’s throne for

Forgiveness and healing.

Someday I’ll look upon the nail prints

You bear, and know the reality:

That You filled the puncture wounds

In my soul with Your own precious Blood;

The redeeming, restorative balm

Of Salvation

Which makes me forever complete, whole—

No more pain, only peace and joy

In the Glory of Your Presence ~

Thank You, Jesus.
